Frequently Asked Questions
The Technology
What exactly is an EH Energy fuel cell, and how is it different?
It's a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity through an electrochemical reaction. What makes it different is that we’ve re-engineered the cell at the microstructure level, producing a simplified architecture with higher power density than alternatives and far fewer auxiliary parts.
How is it more power-dense than other fuel cells?
Our stacks reach about 8 kW/L and 4 kW/kg at stack level. This means that a single EH Energy Stack delivers 300 kW+ on one balance of plant. That means fewer parts, lower cost, less parasitic load and higher reliability.
Does it really run in any orientation?
Yes. Our fuel cell architecture is orientation-independent, which is why it meets large stationary power needs and mobile, maritime and aviation where fixed-position systems can't be used.
What efficiency does it achieve?
Our stacks achieve efficiencies comparable to market alternatives. With integrated heat recovery, combined heat-and-power efficiency reaches significantly higher.
Is this a real product or a prototype?
It's a commercial product. We’ve tested it for years, proven deployments and are taking orders today from customers across sectors.
Fuel and emissions
What fuels can the systems run on?
Our fuel cell platform is fuel-agnostic. It runs on natural gas, hydrogen, ammonia, methanol or biogas. Our EH Energy System is specifically designed to operate with low-pressure hydrogen, which is what makes our integrated steam methane reforming module practical.
If it runs on natural gas, is it still clean?
A fuel cell converts fuel to electricity using an electrochemical process, so there are no NOₓ, SOₓ or particulate emissions at the point of use. With natural gas, our steam methane reforming module releases some emissions but it can be mitigated with abatement measures and carbon capture offering a cleaner system than combustion incumbents.
Can I start on gas now and move to hydrogen later?
Yes. That's a core design principle. Commit to one power platform today and change the fuel path as the green-hydrogen, methanol and ammonia supply chains mature. The reformer and carbon-capture modules are optional, not a lock-in: the same plant runs unmodified on delivered hydrogen when it's available.
How does the carbon capture work?
Where natural gas is the starting fuel, on-site steam methane reforming produces PEM-grade hydrogen directly and a carbon-capture unit recovers CO₂ from the reformer flue gas as liquid CO₂. The captured CO₂ can go to permanent geological storage or mineralization, or to industrial reuse.
Deployment and scale
How fast can you deliver?
We’re taking orders now for stationary and mobile power deployments. We offer proven technology and faster delivery than most available alternatives.
How does it scale?
On one architecture: Our 250 kW EH Energy System is the building block. We package these into 3 MW EH Power Blocks which form the basis of our EH Power Plants.
Do I need a grid connection?
No. Systems are onsite and behind-the-meter, meaning they operate independently of the grid, bypass interconnection queues and offer true energy security.
How much space does it take?
A 40-ft container delivers 3 MW - higher power density than comparable fuel-cell offerings in about half the footprint.
Can it follow variable loads, like AI training?
Yes. The fuel cell ramps almost instantly, so it follows dynamic load profiles while needing far smaller batteries than combustion or alternative fuel-cell systems require.
Commercials
What does it cost?
Our costs are in line with combustion alternatives - including the integration of our steam methane reforming module. We’ve shifted the fuel cell cost curve with our simplified microstructure and proprietary automated manufacturing technology.
What's the cost of energy on natural gas?
Our long-term levelized cost of energy is competitive with combined-cycle gas, gas peaking, renewables, coal and other fuel cells - and a cheaper alternative than nuclear.
Can I buy energy, or do I have to buy the power plant system?
We focus on where we’re best - designing, manufacturing and selling fuel cell systems and power plants. We normally sell directly to customers or to an independent power producer (IPP) who owns and operates our systems and power plants. In certain cases, we can offer an integrated solution with a preferred IPP so you can just buy power.
Who installs and integrates it?
We work as a design partner, frequently alongside system integrators, EPCs and owner-operators. We scope the system to your load profile, fuel strategy, uptime requirement, redundancy and emissions targets, then deliver a standardized containerized or skid-mounted solution.
Does it work with hydrogen and gas?
Yes. Our fuel cells and power plants are fuel agnostic. They operate with hydrogen directly or with gas with our integrated steam methane reforming module. You can also start with gas and transition to hydrogen as the market evolves.
Reliability, safety and support
How reliable is it, and how much maintenance does it need?
Our systems are modular and inherently simpler than alternatives. Systems can be serviced or replaced without taking the whole plant offline and routine service can be handled by site technicians, with scheduled stack replacement on a planned cycle.
How do you monitor the systems?
Every system ships with proprietary Cell Voltage Monitoring (CVM) and cloud telemetry, giving fleet-wide visibility, remote support and predictive maintenance that flags issues before they cause downtime.
Is it safe for hazardous or in-port environments?
Yes. Our stack enclosure is gas-tight and designed for safety.
What about heat and water?
Every fuel cell produces electricity, heat and water. Both the heat (in a clean coolant loop at ~75–85 °C) and the water (as pure, deionized condensate) can be recovered rather than wasted, for circularity.
Manufacturing and the company
Can you produce at the volumes large customers need?
Yes. That's central to our approach. Instead of stamping, welding and layer-by-layer assembly, we laminate and cut cells in one continuous, highly automated process. This proprietary line is designed for multiple gigawatts of annual capacity per line – and we can easily add lines as customers require greater capacity.
Where do you manufacture?
We currently manufacture in Switzerland and are in the process of setting up a factory in Texas.
How do you integrate the full power plants?
We partner with selected established global packaging partners to integrate our power plants. This removes the single-point-of-failure risks endemic to many alternatives and offers flexibility and risk management to customers.
