Steve Black

Black serves as SVP Commercial Operations. Black joined EH as a part of the majority buyout in 2026.

Black is also Co-Founder and General Partner of American-Swiss energy investment firm Smart Society Capital (SSC). Black leads SSC’s fund management, operations and investments, leveraging decades of analytical and operations experience across sectors.  He currently serves as Board Director and/or investment lead for SSC’s investments in Blykalla (nuclear SMR) and Greyscale AI (industrial AI).  Black is currently seconded as operating partner and EH SVP Commercial Operations from SSC.

Black previously led US-UK software company Topia as Co-Founder, holding roles as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Product Officer from 2010-2020 where he helped scale global finance, operations and products. Over a decade-long tenure, Black helped scale the company’s global operations across more than 15 countries and was responsible for the analysis of investments into new products and regions. After Topia, Black focused on decarbonization tech. He is a founding advisor to the biodiversity asset standard and registry, Natural Capital Reserve, and co-founded asset management software company, EcoSmart Labs. Prior to Topia, Black was an Associate Partner at management consultancy firm Oliver Wyman, where he focused on optimizing operations and products for data-led business models.
